He doesn't have the grades, he doesn't have the money, he doesn't have the connections to become a lawyer. But a respected judge is moved by his mock trial talent and offers him an opportunity to achieve something extraordinary: win a national chess tournament. Win a game, and win his destiny.

Checkmate was filmed exclusively in Northern California by writer-director Arvin N. Berner.  The movie was photographed using Sony’s revolutionary PMW EX-1 camera.  A small and dedicated crew created a warm and family-like atmosphere through the over 30 days of production.  

Checkmate features heartfelt performances by and ensemble of Northern California actors.  For some this was their first feature film, but they bring their passion and dedication to the screen with laudable sincerity.
